Roads to Success Welcomes New Deputy Director Angelo Cabrera, Advocate for Educational Equity

We are incredibly excited to announce that Angelo Cabrera has joined the RTS team as our new Deputy Director of Education and Career Pathways. Throughout his impressive career, Angelo has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to expanding access to education and creating opportunities for immigrant and underserved communities.

As a former undocumented, unaccompanied immigrant youth who was once homeless, Angelo understands firsthand the complex barriers these students face. He has dedicated his career to breaking down those barriers through advocacy, activism, and service.

Angelo founded a non-profit organization focused on helping undocumented and indigenous students access higher education. He also co-founded a dual language charter school in the South Bronx to aid immigrant students with language transition and accessing quality education.

At the City University of New York, Angelo was instrumental in launching the movement to pass legislation allowing undocumented students to pay in-state tuition. He served on numerous task forces aimed at increasing opportunities for Mexican and Mexican-American students in higher education.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Angelo's powerful personal story of self-deporting to Mexico and eventually returning to the U.S. gained national media attention. He has also appeared in various English and Spanish media outlets, such as the New York Times, ABC Eyewitness News, People Magazine en Español, Primer Impacto, and Despierta America of Univision and Telemundo 47. People Magazine described Angelo’s life in its story “El Angel de la Educación” (the Angel of Education); and his life story has been published in a book and many documentaries.

RTS CEO Sheila Duke said, “We are incredibly fortunate to have Angelo bring his wealth of experience and passion for empowering immigrant youth to his new role here. I am confident his leadership and commitment to equity will help us transform opportunities for students from all backgrounds.”
