While growing up as an inner city youth in Brooklyn, NY I had an opportunity to participate in an afterschool program. Until this day I remember the confidence it instilled in me. It provided the space to explore new opportunities such as modern dance and drama as well as a safe place to enjoy being a kid. When I was a child I wanted to be a lawyer. After completing my degree in psychology and criminal justice, my passion shifted to wanting to prevent young people from entering the criminal justice system. I discovered that through exposure and access to alternative educational opportunities, young people have a greater drive and motivation to finish high school, go onto college, trade school or the military and become successful adults.
