On December 3rd, 40 students from Roads to Success (MS 57)after-school program had the unique opportunity to attend the Edges of Ailey exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. This unforgettable experience introduced our youth to the stunning intersections of art, culture, and history while celebrating the extraordinary legacy of Alvin Ailey.
Curated by Adrienne Edwards and described as an “extravaganza”, Edges of Ailey weaves together visual art, live performance, music, archival materials, and an impressive multi-screen video installation inspired by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. For our students, it was a dynamic and immersive exploration of art and identity that will leave a lasting impression.
This memorable event was made possible thanks to the planning and coordination of Skyller Walkes, Principal at Rootz and Wingz, LLC,and CEO of RootzGround & WingzFly Nonprofit. Dr. Walkes has a remarkable history of designing transdisciplinary educational experiences for diverse learners across the nation and the globe. For this occasion, she went above and beyond to ensure the event was both impactful and accessible for all participants. We are deeply grateful for her dedication to fostering spaces where young people can connect with their heritage, explore culture, and gain a deeper understanding of their identity.
We also extend our gratitude to the Whitney Museum for hosting this incredible event and to the passionate staff and Art Instructors who shared their expertise and love for art with our students. Your generosity and guidance helped them explore the beauty and complexity of art, deepening their appreciation for its role in storytelling and cultural expression.
At Roads to Success, we believe in creating pathways for youth to dream, discover, and connect with the world around them. Opportunities like these inspire creativity, curiosity, and confidence in our young learners, and we are thrilled to continue building bridges to enriching experiences for the next generation.
