In the heart of New York City today, over 50 young minds from Roads to Success(RTS) gathered for a transformative experience at the NYC Teenspace Youth Summit. This powerful event, hosted by NYC Talkspace and NYC Health, in collaboration with Roads to Success and Department of Youth and Community Development(DYCD), focused on a critical aspect of youth development: Mental Well-Being.
As our youth stepped into the summit, the air buzzed with anticipation. This wasn't just another day out; it was an opportunity to delve deep into the essence of self-care and emotional resilience. The summit offered a carefully curated selection of interactive sessions, each designed to equip our young participants with practical tools for managing their mental health.
One of the most impactful moments came during the grounding exercises. Here, our youth engaged in open, honest conversations about their personal experiences with stress. They learned to identify their unique stressors and, more importantly, how to combat them through effective breathwork techniques. It was inspiring to see them embrace these new skills, ready to apply them in their daily lives.
The yoga sessions that followed were more than just physical exercise; they were a journey into the importance of holistic self-care. Our participants discovered how taking care of their bodies directly impacts their mental state, creating a harmonious balance essential for overall well-being.
A highlight of the summit was the Positive Affirmation activity led by Ryan Kelly from NYC Talkspace. Her words resonated deeply with our youth:
"While we always remember that kindness is of prime importance, we often forget to be kind to ourselves. We need to be honest, kind, and proud of ourselves and should love ourselves - after all, we have to live with us for life."
This powerful message sparked a visible change in our participants, as they began to understand the crucial role of self-love in mental health.
Perhaps the most empowering aspect of the summit was the open forum where our youth discussed what schools and communities can do to improve mental well-being and awareness. Their insights were not just heard; they were valued, contributing to a larger conversation about creating supportive environments for young people.
At RTS, we're immensely proud to integrate such meaningful experiences into our programs. The NYC Teenspace Youth Summit didn't just provide our youth with mental health tools; it empowered them to become advocates for their own well-being and that of their peers.
