Last week, Roads to Success brought the energy with our annual 3vs3 Basketball Classic tournament! Over 147 middle schoolers from across NYC came together for a thrilling day of friendly competition and basketball fun.
Students from the following schools put their skills on display by forming teams to vie for the championship:
Hyde Leadership Charter Middle School
MS 839
James Weldon Johnson (MS 57)
Level Up (PS 333 & Lafayette Academy)
Hugo Newman Preparatory (PS 180)
Renaissance School of the Arts
MS 206 Jose Celso Barbosa
The gym was buzzing with students cheering on their peers and getting in on the action. Players rotated through pool play before facing off in heated elimination rounds.
In the end, the talented trio of Menkara Lewis, Jenai Kennedy and Cameron Shier from Hugo Newman Preparatory (PS 180) emerged victorious as tournament champs! Menkara also won the 3-point shootout contest, while Cameron was named MVP.
Just as amazing as the competition was the display of sportsmanship and character, students embraced teamwork and showed each other encouragement and respect throughout the event. Their energy and attitude embodied Roads to Success values of belonging, independence, generosity, and mastery.
Shout out to our partners Mike, Brian, and Francesca at Kids of Summer Sports for making this action-packed event possible. The Post Bushwick provided first-class facilities, while DJ and RTS Program Director Terrelle Frazier kept the momentum going all day. Thanks also to Assistant Community School Director Desiree Obando for her coordination. And we can't forget the Hyde Leadership Charter cheerleading squad - their infectious spirit fired up the crowd! Also, a huge thank you to the entire program team, from Deputies to Group Leaders, for their support in the success of the event.
At RTS, days like the 3vs3 Classic are about so much more than basketball. They are about nurturing well-rounded youth, forging connections, expanding horizons and planting seeds of promise. By the looks of the smiles and memories made, we can call this tournament a slam dunk!
