On Feb 17th, a group of exceptional Roads to Success high school students traveled to Albany to participate in the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Conference.
The students were led by our Deputy Director Angelo Cabrera, who helped facilitate powerful conversations between the youth and policy makers throughout the day.
The future leaders showcased tremendous courage as they engaged with elected officials, advocating for issues impacting their communities. They pushed for more educational resources, addressed the urgent need to combat gun violence, and urged increased funding for youth programs and summer jobs. Their insightful perspectives and passion for change left are sounding impact.
For many students, this was their first visit to Albany, providing eye-opening access to civic engagement as they connected with policy makers.
RTS CEO Sheila Duke, who was also present in Albany this weekend, said, “I am incredibly proud of the way our students represented themselves and their communities in Albany. Their voices are so important, and they truly inspired me with their leadership this weekend.”
RTS could not be more proud of these young leaders. The way they confidently represented their schools and neighborhoods was beyond impressive.
Events like the Legislative Conference reinforce our commitment to uplifting student voices and providing platforms for them to create meaningful change. Watching our students engage actively in the political process gives us hope for a bright future led by their generation.
As we reflect on this impactful weekend, we are reminded of the incredible potential within each student we serve. RTS is honored to nurture their growth as scholars and leaders. Albany demonstrated their readiness to achieve their dreams and impact their communities.
