On April 24th, a vibrant spectacle of innovation unfolded as over 200 students from 8 different schools, ranging from ages ten to sixteen, converged at the STEAM Fair Event. This dynamic gathering wasn't just about showcasing the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), but about igniting sparks of curiosity and possibility in young minds.
Hands-on experiences were the order of the day, with various workshops offering immersive insights into STEM-related career paths. Among the highlights were classes on movement, where the intricacies of bodily functions were explored through the art of dance, demonstrating how our physical selves impact our daily lives. In the conductors’ class, participants delved into the world of electricity, creating it manually through the construction of robots and helicopters. Meanwhile, the intricacies of coding came alive as students engaged in online games, applying their newfound skills in real-time.
What made this event truly special was the emphasis on collaboration and teamwork. Participants were paired up, providing them with opportunities to hone their collaborative skills while interacting with peers from different schools.
The day was further enriched by insightful talks from four esteemed speakers, each offering invaluable advice and encouragement to pursue STEM-related paths. Jamilah Alman soob-Rose, a prominent social justice leader of Puerto Rican and Arab descent, emphasized the importance of women empowerment and financial literacy. Edgar Samudio, a Latino tech influencer, shared his journey of professional growth and community engagement, inspiring the next generation of technologists. Momoko Sullivan underscored the significance of authentic scientific experiences in shaping future scientists, while Anthony Casanovas, an instructional technology specialist of Nuyorican heritage, highlighted the transformative power of educational partnerships.
"Today's event was all about lighting something within,"remarked our CEO, Sheila Duke. "By exposing students to a diverse range of STEM activities and introducing them to BIPOC role models, our aim was to help them envision themselves in these careers and realize that any dream is within reach."
Special thanks go to our sponsors—the Department of Youth and Community Development, Citizen Scientist, School’s Out New York City, Training Future Leaders, and Global Citizens—for their invaluable support in making this event possible.
The STEAM Fair Event wasn't just a gathering of young minds; it was a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and the boundless possibilities that emerge when ideas come to life. As these students return to their classrooms and communities, may they carry with them the inspiration and determination to shape a brighter future through the wonders of STEAM.
